I recently spent the weekend in the home of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Verona, found in the north of Italy, is without a doubt one of the most romantic getaway cities in Europe. Each day the stunning third century BC Romanesque town centre reflects the warm sun on it’s red, pink and white marble walkways. Verona History
The city of Verona is a UNESCO world heritage site due to it’s extraordinary historical background dating back to the first century AD. The architectural influence from it’s numerous colonies through out the centuries can easily be seen. At each turn you will find influences from Roman to Gothic and the Venetian Republic. All of this can be experienced throughout the ancient marbled streets of Verona city. It was during the Venetian republic that Verona’s stunning fortifications of churches and palaces were born, creating the beautiful landscape that Verona is today.
The city is known for one of the most notorious Roman amphitheatre arenas in the World, which since being built in the first century AD has continued to host the world’s most renowned Operatic performers, with a capacity of 30,000 spectators.
The stunning Castlevecchio on the River Adige, is within a few minutes from the cobbled shopping streets, and dates back as far as the early 13 hundreds. It was originally built as a military fortress to protect the city, it was later damaged in the Napoleon war, and today offers a peaceful and beautiful view of the River Adige.
The Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore (12th to 15th century) is both known for it’s gothic and Romanesque architecture and the mythical crypt where Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet are supposed to have married.

Within 20 minutes by train, visitors can stroll the luxurious piers by Lake Garda and Lake Como, walk along the quaint cobbled hills where the best Italian restaurants are hidden behind small shuttered doorways, disguised by the floral scent from the local lavender shops.
