Luggage Allowance and Restrictions – A Guide to Airline Regulations

Hand Luggage Allowance

Airlines can vary in their hand luggage allowances, both in dimensions and weight. The average weight for hand luggage tends to be around 10kg, and measurements are often around 55 x 40 x 25cm in diameter for Economy Class, with more weight allowance in Business Class. Here is a break down of hand luggage allowances by airline as of July 2015.

Hand Luggage Restricted Items

There are already plenty of situations that risk delaying you when travelling, so save yourself the inconvenience of having to unpack all your belongings in a crowded security area, the devastation of handing away your favourite perfume to the security guard, and the waste of perfectly good shower products binned before check-in. Here are a few key items you need to avoid packing when travelling by air.

Resized-8ZE2R (1)

Don’t pack anything flammable, explosive, or chemical for obvious security and safety reasons. Check with your airline about any liquids, sharp, or breakable objects to avoid potential injuries or damages. You can pack electronics, small tools, matches and medication in your hand luggage, as long as the items meet the airline packing guidelines. But you may need to remove them at the baggage checking area, so make sure they are convenient to remove if necessary.

Tetris Packing – Clothes Folding Hacks for More Space and Less Creasing

the VenuesWorld are constantly on the go – from site-inspections to events, we travel a lot, so our hand luggage packing and clothes folding hacks have become rituals we can do with our eyes closed! Here are a few packing tips from seasoned business travellers.

Clothes Folding Hacks

  • Bundle Wrapping – Bundle wrapping allows you to fit more clothes into a small bag, while also reducing creasing. You will need a core item to wrap your clothes around. Your toiletry bag or all of your socks will do the trick. Start by laying out a garment prone to creasing on a flat surface, and continue to layer the rest of your clothes flat on top, ensuring to spread the edges out evenly (sleeves and hoods), so that your finished pile looks like a star. Now place your core object in the centre, and proceed to wrap the garments around the core. Keeping larger garments prone to creasing on the outside layer, where they are less likely to crease.

  • Alternate Folding – This method is quite similar to the bundle wrapping technique, except instead of using a core object for all your clothes, you interlace your clothes as you fold them. This can be done with multiple garments at a time. Start by placing your shirt on a flat surface with the top, middle and bottom button closed to keep the shape. Now fold the sleeves into straight lines down the back, followed by your trousers and jumper. Proceed to fold the few garments neatly together. This reduces creasing of the clothes, and also reduced the space used for packing.

  • Rolling Technique – Rolling your garments individually is great for space efficiency, but not great for easily creased shirts and suit sets. Use this technique for smaller and items less likely to crease as much such as wools, cottons, and sports clothes. This is a great way to fill in the smaller spaces left over, after packing all the larger items.

The Packing Order

Now that everything is folded and ready to pack, its time to play luggage Tetris!

  • Always start with the large heavier items such as shoes and coats. Push the shoe soles neatly against the corners and edges of the bag.
  • Second,  place the bulky clothes bundles into the centre of the bag, and follow up with the toiletry bag and smaller rolled items along with the gaps on either side and into any empty corners.
  • If there is no padded laptop compartment, ensure to place delicate tech items amongst the clothes in the centre for added padding and protection.
  • If you are packing your cabin luggage, make sure that anything you might need throughout the flight such as a jumper, book and headphones are easily accessible at the top of the bag.
  • If there is an external zip pocket, use this for documentation that may be required again later. If you are stowing your luggage away for the journey, we recommend keeping your important travel documents and bank cards on your person for added security.

Additional Business Travel  Hacks

  • Keep all your expense receipts in one pouch to be sorted after the trip. But you can reduce this workload easily by using an expenses app such as Trippeo on your phone throughout your trip. Many come with simple photo functions that save you hours of work!
  • Always keep a cotton laundry bag, and make sure to roll your garments into small space-saving bundles, as you no longer need to worry about them creasing in your bag.
  • When packing shirts, close the top, middle and bottom buttons before folding. This helps keep the shape of the garment straight and less prone to creasing.

It’s in the Bag! – How to choose the right carry-on luggage

If you are planning on travelling a lot, you will thank yourself for investing in a well-designed light weight bag. Don’t make the common mistake of choosing a stylish, hard-shelled bag with all the bows and whistles, but unable to meet your needs. The reality is, you will be wheeling, carrying, weighing, and struggling to close this bag on your most exhausting long-distance trips. Instead, focus your attention on the following attributes, when choosing the ideal hand luggage.

Traits to look for when buying carry-on luggage

  • 4 strong rubber wheels with a 360 degree spin – Only when you find yourself travelling regularly, will you really understand the pain of squeaky wheels, terrible suspension, and turning corners. Good quality rubber wheels should take the weight off you, and allow you to smoothly sprint through the departure gates.
  • Soft and expandable – Hard shell bags are great for protecting your valuables, but a soft borders offer more forgiveness for those duty free investments you make on the way home. Ideally choose a compact bag with hard corners and an expandable zip section.
  • Tech compartments – Even in soft shell bags, you can find padded tech compartments in the centre to keep your laptop and tablet safe. Go one step further, and invest in a bag that includes a portable battery charger and wifi router, for added convenience.
  • External Pockets – A thin external pocket is perfect for keeping your travel documents and your phone. But steer clear of clumpy outer pockets that don’t hold much, and only increase your luggage dimensions.
  • Light-Weight – Choose a light-weight bag that doesn’t impact too much on your limited weight restrictions. Most high-quality travel bags are built with durable light-weight fabrics, except for some allowance for good quality wheels of course.
  • Comfortable Carry Straps – Not all environments allow for smooth wheeling, so it is also important to ensure the carry straps are fitted to suit you. You will be thankful for double shoulder straps (backpack style) as this allows for even weight distribution. If there is only one shoulder strap, make sure the length is adapted to your height, and that there is sufficient padding on your shoulder. A thin zip cover is also great for keeping the straps out of the way when they aren’t needed.

Event Marketing Industry Tips

The team at SoolNua welcomed a group of talented marketing and strategy specialists to share their tips for optimal event marketing, at the stunning Smock Alley Theatre. Here are a few helpful recommendations we took away from the event.

It is glaringly obvious to state that the world we live in today is very much an ever changing digital world. However for some reason, we still insist on putting the word ‘digital’ before almost any work term that involves technological systems, which is almost all of them! And as we rapidly power through innovative game changing technologies, not everyone is taking advantage of these wonderful, time saving, cost saving, and often entertaining tools. The conference organised by SoolNua and hosted by Padraig Gilligan and Patrick Delaney focused on the three important concepts of growth and effectiveness in an ever growing, ever changing economy of the digital age: event marketing technology, strategy, and execution. With some added yoga positions for health and balance!

Venue

What better a venue to demonstrate modern technological innovation, than the contrasting historical Smock Alley Theatre in the Medieval Quarter of old Dublin City. This stunning venue was a custom built theatre in the 1600’s, and later went on to be a church, a tourist attraction, and since 2012 the building has been restored to its original purpose, the Smock Alley Theatre.

“..the most atmospheric theatre in the city. With its exposed brick, declining gangway and multi-storey viewpoints”

Content

Simon Geraghty, owner of the B2B Marketing Company Dot Dash discussed the importance of content marketing and design in today’s competitive environment.  Simon recommends focusing on these 4 core areas to ensure a successful digital business.

  • Solve problems
  • Make it shareable
  • Drive visits
  • Become and authority

Strategy

John Treacy,  Managing Director of Treacy Consulting talked about 3 key principles he recommends focusing on in order to optimize HR and sales effectiveness within the corporate sector.

  • Sales Force Effectiveness: Ensure your team understand the business goals, and are clear on how to achieve them.
  • Strategic Rewards: Re-engage your staff through motivation and fresh ideas.
  • Organisational Transformation: Take a step back in order to make the necessary changes to company cultures.

Yoga

Aoife Delaney, Director of global sales at Ovation, re-energised the crowd with some simple and effective yoga stretches to improve the circulation, relax the muscles and focus the mind. Definitely something everybody should be incorporating into our everyday lives.

  • Hands to feet: Aids digestion and circulation
    • Inhale deeply through your nose, raise arms above your head, & look towards the sky
    • Exhale slowly as you bend at the hips, touching your feet with your hands. Breathe normally, and enjoy the stretch in your spine and back of legs.
  • Superman Warrior pose: Opens lungs, improves concentration & confidence
    • Exhale deeply and move one step back, keeping your weight on your back leg, then move the other foot forward and lean your torso forward.
    • Stretch your arm out on front of you, or behind you like superman. If you can raise one foot straight off the floor behind you, even better.
  • Prayer twist: Energises, stretches the hips and calf muscles
    • Inhale deeply and bring hands to your chest in a prayer pose. Sit back onto your glutes into the chair pose.
    • Exhale slowly, and twist your torso to the side, keeping your hands in the prayer position at your chest, and look up.

Technology

Martin Klöfver, founder and CEO of Trippus Event Solutions supplied the event with a very simple yet innovative communication system for the conference. Implementing it at the user’s end on both a strategic level and hands-on during live events, Trippus is an effective and easy to use event marketing technology tool, that optimizes both desktop functions and text formats for mobile onsite use.

  • Pre-event communications and reminders – share information about the speakers and venue which can be read directly through a link in a text message.
  • Ticketing system – a bar-code ticketing text system allows for paperless registrations directly through the phone.
  • Polling system – encourage interaction at any stage of the event, by texting a poll question to all the attendees phones, with optional visual display at the event.
  • Onsite communications – For larger events a reminder system can be utilised to inform guests of various presentations and other announcements.
  • Post-event marketing follow up system – Automatically thank your attendees for their participation, send presentation slides, and information about the next event, directly to the users’ phone and email.

Motivation

Kevin Kelly, motivational speaker and author of Do! The Pursuit of Xceptional Execution ended the event on an interactive energy inducing pep talk.

  • Exceptional execution of a normal idea: You don’t need an amazing idea to succeed in business. Instead choose to be exceptional in your execution.
  • Don’t let knowledge scare you off taking risks: There are incredible success stories based on unlikely business ideas. Be smart in your execution to make it work.
  • Be the message: You and your team represent your business. Make sure everyone is on the same page, and is demonstrating the business message in unity.

Refreshments

Event Marketing Exceptional Snacks

No effective conference is complete without visually pleasing, mouth-watering snacks to keep the energy levels up throughout the day, and the team at SoolNua made sure to do just that. The day began with various breakfast options of fruit salads, brioche, French toast and banana porridge. A selection of Raw and Natural Juices were supplied by Ginger, and Aoife Mc Crum and Sarah Kavanagh went all out baking a gorgeous selection of cookies especially for the event.

Final Thoughts

Upon looking back at all the information and advice shared at the SoolNua conference, here are the key points taken from the event.

  • Have a clear goal for your business, and know your audience
  • Solve problems and make your content shareable
  • Make sure everyone is on the same page, and reward your employees
  • You don’t need an exceptional idea, you do need exceptional execution
