The World’s Most Romantic Cities

Since the 14th Century the Feast of Saint Valentine, or Valentine’s Day as it is more commonly known, has been associated with love. For the day that is in it asked our local experts to put together a list of the most romantic cities to visit in the world. Some of the world’s cities have dual identities. They are modern, world-class cities, put beneath this shiny exterior often lies a historical and romantic interior.  We’ve put together some ideas on how to spend the perfect Valentine’s day with your loved one in some amazing destinations, that are incredibly romantic but may not have previously been on your list.

1. Paris, FranceParis

Paris is undoubtedly the world’s most famous romantic destination. The City of Lights is home to some of the most romantic experiences and activities. From taking a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower to taking in the stunning views from the Sacre Coeur. The city exudes romance. Any day in Paris is a day well spent, but a day is especially spent well walking hand-in-hand with the one you love as you wander through the cobblestone streets of Montmartre. Lisbon may come as a surprise to many as a city of romance, but it has been ranked one of the World’s Top 10 Most Romantic Cities. Lisbon is a great city to visit for many reasons. The Portuguese Capital is full of magnificent old buildings that are now filled with the most amazing restaurants, bars and boutique stores. Take a walk hand-in-hand along the banks of the Tejo River, spend an afternoon wandering through the winding “Travessa”, or just experience life amongst the cobbled streets that are filled with stunning street art. 3. Verona, ItalyVerona

The home of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, The city is paradise for lovers from around the world, with romance running throughout the streets and buildings. Even if you are not in love, you can become entranced by this beautiful city and explore this third century BC UNESCO world heritage site.  Who knows, you may even find your own Romeo or Juliet while wandering these streets and experiencing Verona’s signature dishes such as Polenta and Risotto. With so much to do, this is a wonderful destination regardless if you are in love, searching for love or simply searching for a break.

4. Prague, Czech RepublicPrague

While Paris holds the undisputed crown as the world’s “City of Love” Prague is an eternally romantic city. The capital of the Czech Republic is known as the “Golden City”. The city tends to cast a spell over visitors once they experience the majestic towers, stunning buildings and medieval atmosphere that fill the city. From the historical Staré Mêsto (Old Town) to the Malá Strana (small town), Prague is a city that seems as if time has left it untouched. For those lovers out there, they can take handheld strolls along the Vltava, and then explore this magical city at night. For those who want to explore a city full of charm and intrigue, experience a feast for the senses and a treat for the mind, then Prague is a must-see destination to add to your list.

5. Bruges, BelgiumBruges

If you want to step back in time in a truly romantic city, then you need to visit Bruges in Belgium. A trip to Bruges is a must if you love chocolate. The city will surround you with idyllic scenery, beautiful buildings and fill you with some of the world’s best chocolate. Fall in love with this lovely medieval city. Discover the Dumon Chocolatiere in the Market Square, share an amazing Belgian Hot Chocolate in the Old Chocolate House, which is an amazingly romantic restaurant in Bruges, or explore Minnewater Park which is home to the “Lake of Love”.
